bartsch Expert Forum on Business and Asset Succession

Last week, we welcomed over 50 participants to the 1st bartsch Expert Forum on Business and Asset Succession at the Hotel Der Blaue Reiter in Karlsruhe-Durlach.

It was a successful start to a new series of events in which we will be examining the many facets of succession planning together with experts from tax and management consulting firms as well as banks and insurance companies.

🔹 Andrea Winkler and Hendrik van Ryk from the Karlsruhe Chamber of Crafts provided practical insights into business transfers in the skilled trades and the latest developments.

🔹 Dr. Simon Bahlinger and Daniel Scharpf highlighted the target groups for which family companies in the form of a family GbR or family KG are best suited.

🔹 Hendrik Stroborn and Rüdiger Strubel explained how foundations can be structured in a legally and fiscally sensible way as a succession tool.

Many thanks to all guests for participating and for the enriching discussions. We look forward to continuing in the next year.

Real Estate Day 2025 of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Karlsruhe

with our partner Dr. Alexander Hoff as speaker.

The common thread running through all the presentations: How can we create affordable housing?

Stimulating ideas, inspiring presentations, diverse perspectives, and constructive discussions in a high-caliber panel discussion.

We look back with enthusiasm and are already looking forward to the next Real Estate Day in 2026.

New publication: AI Regulation in practice!

The AI Regulation, also known as the “AI Act,” creates the first uniform legal framework for artificial intelligence in Europe. Companies are now faced with the task of understanding and implementing the legally compliant use of AI systems.

In their newly published handbook “Die KI-Verordnung in der Praxis” (The AI Regulation in Practice), our colleagues Dr. habil. Christian Förster and Julia Straburzynski provide guidance and practical insights into the provisions of the AI Regulation.

The handbook clearly explains the AI Regulation for anyone who regularly deals with AI applications in their company and monitors their use or decides on their use, whether in a specialist department, IT, or management.

The first part covers the basics of the AI Regulation, describes the different AI systems, and introduces the players and their roles. The second part systematically explains, with practical examples, the obligations that providers, operators, or other players must fulfill depending on the AI system.

More than 20 diagrams make it easier to get started with particularly complex regulations.

The book answers practical questions such as:

🔹When is an AI system “high-risk”?

🔹Are there also obligations for “harmless” applications?

🔹How do powerful AI systems and data protection go together?

🔹How do I make my AI system “cyber secure”?

🔹What should I do if my AI system may have caused damage?

Congratulations to our colleagues on the new publication!

Advoselect Annual Conference in Paris from September 25 to September 27, 2025

Inspiring exchange with colleagues from all over Europe. This time, the focus was on arbitration proceedings.

In view of the ever-increasing length of proceedings in the state judiciary and the increasing frequency of international legal disputes, arbitration proceedings are a promising approach to achieving cost-effective, legally secure, and rapid results — provided you know how.

Our partner Dr. Alexander Hoff, himself an arbitrator, attended this year’s congress in Paris and was able to exchange ideas on this topic with numerous colleagues.

We are delighted to have been able to host Tax Day 2025 in the stylish surroundings of the tower block of Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw.

We would like to express our special thanks to Dr. Sandy Schüler-Täsch, judge at the Federal Finance Court, who shared with us the latest developments in VAT case law relating to real estate transactions.

The stimulating discussions and intensive exchange among the participants once again demonstrated how important dialogue between practitioners, consultants, and the judiciary is.

Many thanks to all guests for their participation and the enriching discussions.

Bartsch Rechtsanwälte appoints Rüdiger Strubel as partner

On July 1, 2025, Rüdiger Strubel was appointed partner at Bartsch Rechtsanwälte.

RĂĽdiger Strubel has been admitted to the bar since 2006 and as a tax advisor since 2013. He is also a specialist lawyer for tax law. He joined our team in March 2022 and has since made a significant contribution to the expansion of our interdisciplinary consulting services.

He provides comprehensive advice to national and international investors in the areas of corporate law, tax law, criminal tax law, and transactions—with a particular focus on tax structuring, tax litigation, tax audits, preventive tax reviews, advisor liability, foreign trade and social security law, as well as tax due diligence and support for asset and share deals. In doing so, he always keeps the big picture in mind.

Rüdiger Strubel studied law at the University of Heidelberg and worked for PwC and EY for over twelve years, as well as several years for PwC Legal – in particular advising internationally active companies in the finance and real estate sectors.

His motto: “One contact person – multiple disciplines.”
This way of thinking exemplifies our firm’s full-service approach. Today, complex challenges require integrated solutions that combine different areas of law.

By expanding our partnership, we are sending a clear signal about the strategic development of Bartsch Rechtsanwälte—particularly with regard to further expanding our presence in Baden-Württemberg.

Congratulations, Rüdiger Strubel—we look forward to continuing our successful collaboration!

Strong together in Europe: Bartsch at the Advoselect network meeting in Augsburg

Advoselect – Strong together in Europe

Advoselect is an innovative, Europe-wide network of German-speaking commercial law firms. Our cooperation is based on partnership, mutual support, and a common goal: providing excellent legal advice in commercial law.

With a seal of approval for quality, competence, and reliability, Advoselect offers cross-border commercial legal advice of the highest standard – anywhere in Europe.

We promote personal relationships, openness, and diversity in an international, interdisciplinary network – with a focus on small and medium-sized enterprises and the future of the economy.

Through exchange, internationality, and networking, we create sustainable added value – for our members and their clients.

In May, we met in Augsburg – an inspiring exchange among colleagues from 15 countries.

Over 40 participants came together to gain new inspiration, network, and grow together. One highlight was the practice-oriented sales training with our speaker Liane Allmann, which offered valuable suggestions on how law firms can position their consulting services even more specifically and create added value for our clients.

The warmth, openness, and trust within the network were palpable—Advoselect thrives on genuine cooperation across borders.

We incorporate new ideas into our everyday lives—and look forward to everything we can achieve together.

Opening ceremony for our Pforzheim location on May 14, 2025

We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone who shared this special moment with us at the PZ Forum. Thank you very much for coming in such large numbers, for the appreciative discussions, and for the great atmosphere.

In his speech, Dr. Alexander Hoff impressively outlined the history, values, and future of our law firm, while Dr. Marc Pfirmann succinctly summarized the advantages and potential of Pforzheim as a business location. Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer’s speech on current global politics, economics, and the arms industry was full of thought-provoking ideas and was a real highlight of the evening.

We ended the evening in a relaxed atmosphere with cocktails, food, music, and good conversation—in the spirit of genuine networking.

Pforzheim, we look forward to everything that lies ahead!

Dr. Marc Pfirmann joins Bartsch Rechtsanwälte in Pforzheim

Bartsch Rechtsanwälte welcomes Dr. Marc Pfirmann as a new partner on January 1, 2025. With his comprehensive expertise in corporate law/M&A, he will strengthen the already strong M&A team, which currently consists of attorneys Hendrik Stroborn, Bernhard Fritz, Ulrich A. Götz (Karlsruhe), Dr. Thomas Scharpf (Munich), Florian Krug, and Daniel Scharpf. Together, the significantly expanded team will continue to operate as a unified entity in the region.

Dr. Marc Pfirmann brings with him many years of experience as a corporate partner, gained at the US law firm Hughes Hubbard & Reed in Los Angeles, Gleiss Lutz, Ladenburger, and most recently Bender Harrer Krevet, among others. The 47-year-old expert will take over the establishment and management of a new office in Pforzheim, thereby strengthening Bartsch Rechtsanwälte’s regional presence.

The location is part of Bartsch Rechtsanwälte’s regional development strategy and a further step towards providing even better service to clients in Baden-WĂĽrttemberg. The aim is to establish Pforzheim as a full-service commercial law firm and, in addition to corporate law, to further develop the areas of labor law, construction, architectural and real estate law, public procurement law, and IT law in particular.

Nowadays, solutions are rarely based on expertise in a single field. When things get more challenging, smooth cooperation across the boundaries of individual areas of law is required. Bartsch Rechtsanwälte meets this requirement with its interdisciplinary team at its Pforzheim office.
Reinforcement by Dr. Simon Bahlinger

In addition to Dr. Pfirmann, Dr. Simon Bahlinger, associate at Bender Harrer Krevet, has also joined Bartsch Rechtsanwälte. Together, they will contribute to the further expansion of the corporate law and M&A practice and to an even stronger presence of Bartsch Rechtsanwälte in Baden-Württemberg.

Bartsch Rechtsanwälte are delighted to have received five awards!

Handelsblatt – Germany’s best law firms: Bartsch Rechtsanwälte received awards in five categories in Baden-WĂĽrttemberg: construction law, IT law, media and copyright law, outsourcing, and technology law.

The US publisher Best Lawyers has identified Germany’s top commercial law firms for 2024 exclusively for Handelsblatt. The rating is based on the number of recommendations made by lawyers. The peer-to-peer principle is used here: lawyers vote for colleagues whom they consider particularly recommendable.

Christian Förster provided entertainment with his presentation “The AI Act in a nutshell – New legal framework for AI system providers” and at the same time managed to convey complex legal contexts in an understandable way. His contribution stimulated in-depth discussions and gave participants valuable insights into the upcoming regulatory challenges for the IT industry.

New directive on federal funding for efficient buildings (BEG) and effects on contract design

A presentation as part of the general meeting of the Baden-WĂĽrttemberg Glass Window Facade Association.

The revised funding guidelines for BEG EM came into force on January 1, 2024. This entails considerable changes that also affect the exporting companies. In particular, it will be necessary in future for the developer to submit a contract subject to a condition precedent or condition subsequent when submitting the application. This includes issues relating to the provision of services before the funding decision is issued, contract and execution deadlines and price adjustments.”

Schwetzingen Administrative Law Days 2024 – Subsidy law

Subsidy law: Sabine Przerwok, specialist lawyer for public procurement law and specialist lawyer for construction and architectural law, will give a lecture on the current status of subsidy law on April 18, 2024. When it comes to the processing of subsidies already granted for projects by private and public clients by the EU, federal government and federal states, questions or even reclaims of subsidies paid out regularly arise.

MMR 2024, p. 4 – IT contract practice 1: Basics and general part

Since 2024, MMR (Zeitschrift fĂĽr IT-Recht und Recht der Digitalisierung) has had a new section on contractual practice in IT law, which is supervised by our colleague Christian Förster. To begin with, a somewhat longer essay on the basics and the “general part” of IT contracts in issue 1/2024 – from practice for practice. This will be followed by contributions on individual types of contracts and special cases.

New in April 2024: “Construction law for construction companies – a construction compass”

Practice-oriented and targeted

The book is based on the main responsibilities of a company’s departments in the realization of a construction project. Quotations and contract conclusion, purchasing, construction site coordination, service and maintenance are also covered in individual chapters, as is management. The practical structure means that every reader can find the relevant chapter at first glance.

Interesting facts for the trade

The year 2024 will bring numerous legal changes that are also of great importance for trade businesses. Our partner Dr. Alexander Hoff informed the members of the Guild for Sanitary and Heating Technology in-house on March 5, 2024 about numerous legal regulations and also gave an insight into the current case law of the Federal Labour Court. The presentation was followed by an interesting discussion.

Bartsch Rechtsanwälte at the EXPO Real in Munich

From October 4 to 6, the largest real estate trade fair EXPO Real took place again in Munich. Investors, project developers and construction companies from all over the world met to exchange experiences.

Our partner, the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion, was also represented there with its own stand and we had many opportunities to talk to clients and interested parties and share our experience and knowledge.

This year in Munich, around 1,900 exhibitors from 36 countries presented their services to 40,000 participants with a focus on sustainability, digitalization and the transformation of the real estate industry.

Advoselect webinar, topic: Energy and heat

Energy security, energy supply and energy prices are not only an economic issue, but also present us with legal challenges.

The law firms in the Europe-wide Advoselect network of lawyers have therefore taken up this issue. In five short articles, you will learn interesting facts about rental and lease agreements for solar and wind power plants, about intra-European energy trading, but also about an important topic for local authorities and investors, namely the possibilities accelerated by politics to designate areas for wind power use.

Our partner Alexander Hoff spoke about this (in the video from minute 41). We look forward to receiving your suggestions.

Certified executor

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Testamentsvollstreckung und Vermögenssorge (AGT) e.V. has awarded our colleague, attorney Dr. Stephanie Funk, the authority to use the title “Certified Executor of Wills (AGT)”.

She has been with Bartsch Rechtsanwälte since 2011. The title underlines her expertise in the field of inheritance law and is also an addition to the title of specialist lawyer for inheritance law, which she has held since 2009. It demonstrates special theoretical and practical knowledge that underlines the ability to take over the execution of wills.

We congratulate Dr. Stephanie Funk and are delighted for her!

6th Regional Conference on the Mobility Transition at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center

How we deal with the issue of mobility will be decisive for our future.

We have taken up this topic and are pleased to participate as an exhibitor at the 6th Regional Conference Mobility Transition, which will take place on Thursday, June 22, 2023, all day at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center under the theme “Mobility Transition in Municipal Reality”.

Bartsch Attorneys at Law at the B2Run in Karlsruhe

This year, 8,500 participants took part in the B2Run in Karlsruhe. Bartsch Rechtsanwälte was also present this year. Under a bright blue sky and sunshine, the run covered a distance of 5.4 km through the castle garden and around the castle garden lake. A great event that we will be attending again next year.

We are already looking forward to the next run in the region – the Bergdorfmeile on 30.06.2023!

Karlsruhe Expert Forum convenes

“It is not legal arguments, but technical know-how that decides the legal dispute” – this provocative thesis proves to be true in numerous construction lawsuits, which are often less about legal issues than about construction details and technically complex contexts. The work of court-appointed experts is therefore of particular importance in these proceedings. Our partner Alexander Hoff gave the opening lecture at this year’s annual conference and highlighted the particular challenges for the parties involved in the proceedings when it comes to dealing with technical issues in court proceedings.

A big thank you to the organizers, especially the Fachverband Glas Fenster Fassade Baden-WĂĽrttemberg, for the professional preparation and implementation and a compliment to all the live and online listeners for the committed discussion and the first-class contributions.

Making city centers more attractive – but how?

The IHK Karlsruhe organized a symposium on this topic on 22.11.2022, at which our partner, lawyer Dr. Alexander Hoff, gave a lecture.

Dying retail trade, precarious housing situations, neglected building fabric and deficiencies in safety and order – many municipalities complain that their city centers are affected. What to do?

Alexander Hoff outlined the legal options available to stop the decline and make city centers more attractive. The audience was particularly interested in the possibility of improving the attractiveness of certain neighbourhoods through self-organized neighbourhood communities of owners and also taking advantage of government assistance.

A big thank you to the IHK’s real estate and location development working group for taking on this important topic of inner city design!

Real estate and city centers – IHK Karlsruhe event

What are the prospects for inner-city commercial units? Vacant retail spaces, falling visitor numbers in city centers and deserted town centers – the pandemic has greatly accelerated this transformation process.

“If Mary and Joseph had known!” Short presentations by Bartsch Rechtsanwälte

On 10.11.2022, our new short lecture series on employment law entitled “If Mary and Joseph had known! Employment law under the Christmas tree” at the Buhlsche MĂĽhle in Ettlingen. The six-person team, consisting of attorneys Ina Bender, Diana Lipska and Alexandra Steg as well as attorneys Dr. Alexander Hoff, Dr. Reinhard Möller and Dr. Gerhard Wagner, presented current and exciting topics in employment law in a cozy atmosphere. The special feature here was not only the unusual presentation format, but also the parallel to the Christmas story, which was skillfully drawn by the speakers in their presentations and provided smiles and laughter in many places. The audience not only enjoyed a highly informative evening, but also an entertaining, cozy and relaxed atmosphere in a wintery, pre-Christmas mood. Thanks to the cold temperatures of the evening, the first mulled wine of the year in the outdoor area tasted particularly good for many guests.

We are already looking forward to our “AnglĂĽhen” next year and hope that we can not only inspire our guests again, but also enchant them!

Are you an entrepreneur or an HR manager in a company, interested in labor law topics and would like to join us next time? Then get in touch with us and send us an e-mail here. We look forward to seeing you!

After the informative input by Dipl.-Ing. Corona Feederle on the topic “New Work – work better! The new hybrid working world” and a subsequent open discussion among the participants, the evening ended in a cozy and convivial atmosphere with small treats and a glass or two of wine.

In addition to maintaining existing contacts, new connections were also made. All in all, the evening was a success and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.

Bartsch Attorneys at Law in Lisbon

Especially in times of crisis, entrepreneurs often have to make quick decisions that need to be legally sound. This challenge is all the greater the more international the company is, as many special features of commercial law in different countries have to be taken into account. Advoselect member law firms are able to support their clients in a special way because they can draw on a broad European network of experts in commercial law in the background. The Advoselect fall conference, which this time took place at member law firm PLMJ Advogados in Lisbon, focused on even more intensive networking between law firms.

“In view of current developments, optimal international networking has become even more important for leading commercial law firms and their clients,” says Viktoria Maruschka, CEO of Advoselect Service AG. “Speed is more important than ever, as there is currently a great deal of momentum in many European countries on important issues of commercial law.” In order to meet the new challenges in the best possible way, the Advoselect network presented and officially launched a new app at the fall conference in Lisbon. “The app developed especially for Advoselect will enable law firms and their professionals to network even more closely across Europe, to work together on current topics and to further deepen the professional exchange on current legislation and the latest rulings.” Clients can also use the new Advoselect app free of charge: The new digital service for entrepreneurs in Europe offers the latest news, an extensive knowledge base, all member law firms with their specialist expertise at a glance, documents to download, recordings of webinars, podcasts on all aspects of commercial law and much more.

The fall conference in Portugal also saw the launch of other new services that Advoselect will soon be offering. This includes an overview of real estate acquisition issues in the various European countries. “As part of the ‘Business in Europe’ series, the construction and real estate law working group at Advoselect intends to develop a corresponding guide in the coming months, which will support entrepreneurs when acquiring real estate in other European countries,” says Viktoria Maruschka. In the other specialist committees, current judgments and issues relating to legislation in the areas of company law, employment law, insolvency law and international arbitration and procedural law were discussed. In the latter committee, the focus this time was primarily on arbitration proceedings with a sanctioned party, particularly with regard to Russia. The multi-day event was hosted this time by PLMJ Avogados in Lisbon, which also offered a varied program to accompany the conference – including a special tuk-tuk ride through Old Lisbon. The leading Portuguese commercial law firm PLMJ is the largest member firm of the Advoselect network with more than 50 partners, more than 150 professionals and 400 employees in seven countries.

38th HR decision-maker network meeting on the MS Karlsruhe

On 29.09.2022, the network meeting of erste reserve personalservice spreen GmbH took place for the 38th time.

Under the motto “Full speed ahead: strategies for a successful crew”, lawyer Dr. Möller spoke, as in previous years, on an employment law topic based on the motto – this time on the perennial topic of “Troublemakers in the team. The right way to deal with obstructionists and naysayers.”

In keeping with the motto, we went on a round trip on the Rhine on the MS Karlsruhe passenger ship. The topic of “time recording”, which has gained considerable interest due to the decision of the Federal Labor Court of 13.09.2022, was not neglected.

After the presentations, there was plenty of opportunity to network on deck over delicacies from the galley and make new contacts here and there.

Troublemakers in the team

Bartsch Rechtsanwälte at the BusinessTeamMarathon in Karlsruhe

This year we were once again part of the Baden Marathon in Karlsruhe.

With a total of 4 runners, we mastered the 42.195 km course as a team – in ideal running weather.

As always, a special highlight was the joint finish in the Carl Kaufmann Stadium. Congratulations to our runners for their great performance!

Next year we want to start again with two running relays – in the meantime we will train hard :).

Specialist lawyer for public procurement law

The Karlsruhe Bar Association has authorized our colleague, lawyer Sabine Przerwok, to use the title “Specialist lawyer for public procurement law”.

Sabine Przerwok is the first full-time lawyer in the Karlsruhe chamber district who is authorized to use this title. The award requires proof of special theoretical and practical knowledge of public procurement law. This is Sabine Przerwok’s second specialist lawyer title. She has been a “specialist lawyer for construction and architectural law” since 2016.

We congratulate Sabine Przerwok and are delighted for her

3rd Bartsch Run in Karlsruhe

Last Wednesday, the time had come again for the 3rd Bartsch Run.

The approx. 5.4 km route ran from the law firm via the GĂĽnther-Klotz-Anlage and back via SĂĽdweststadt. The great thing about the Bartsch Run is that you can not only run, but also cycle (e.g. by bike) and cheer on the runners.

The motto here is: The main thing is to be there – no matter how!

After the finish there were barbecues and drinks in the courtyard of the law firm. We are already looking forward to the next Bartsch run!

Further specialist lawyer for construction and architectural law

The Karlsruhe Bar Association has authorized our colleague, lawyer Sarah Zentner, to use the title “Specialist lawyer for construction and architectural law”.

Sarah Zentner has been working as a lawyer at Bartsch Rechtsanwälte since 2017. With her, four of the firm’s lawyers have this additional qualification, the award of which requires proof of special theoretical and practical knowledge of construction and architectural law. This once again confirms our expertise in this area.

We congratulate Sarah Zentner and are delighted for her!

Bartsch Rechtsanwälte at the Bergdorfmeile

The Bergdorfmeile (Mountain Village Mile) took place in summer temperatures around Hohenwettersbach over a distance of approx. 8.88889 km uphill (and only a little downhill).

This year Bartsch Rechtsanwälte took part in the Bergdorfmeile for the first time – and with great success.

We took first place in the law firm ranking organized by the Karlsruhe Bar Association. With a total of 7 participants, we were the law firm with the most runners.

We also scored points in the individual ranking of female lawyers.
Sarah Zentner and Ina Bender took first place. 2. and 3rd place.

A great event that we will definitely take part in again next year
